After a lapse of four years, arrangements have been made to hold the ‘Sri Lanka Festival’ again on a grand scale in Japan on June 15 and 16, at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

The Sri Lanka–Japan Business Council, which organises this festival, said that after four years, the annual Sri Lanka Festival, which was stopped due to various reasons, will be held on a grand scale in Japan.

The Sri Lanka Festival is the biggest Sri Lankan event in Japan where thousands of Sri Lankans living in Japan meet once a year. Besides, many Japanese people are keen on visiting the festival and associating with Sri Lankans.

According to Sri Lanka–Japan Business Council President Jagath Ramanayake, this Sri Lankan cultural diversity festival will be held at Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park on June 15 and 16 from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy traditional Sri Lankan dance and music and a variety of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.

The organisers have taken steps to give attendees the opportunity to drink king coconut, especially imported from Sri Lanka, since Japanese have a great liking for Sri Lankan king coconut. President of Sri Lanka Society in Japan, Anil Priyantha Gamaethige said it is significant that all the food and drink at this festival will be brought from Sri Lanka.

The organising committee added that the Sri Lanka Festival is a collaborative effort of many organisations and institutions including the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan, the Japan Automobile Importers’ Association, the Sri Lankan Scholars’ Association, Sri Lanka Society in Japan and the Sri Lankan Students’ Association.

It is special that Sri Lankan children and young people living in Japan will perform the cultural events. Currently, nearly 400,000 Sri Lankans live in Japan, and there are 12 Theravada Buddhist temples in Japan.
