Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) further strengthened their ties with the United States (US) following the presence of Douglas Sonnek, Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, during the Inter-Club League Tournament match between Kandy SC and Police SC at the Police Park.

Sonnek was the Chief Guest for this first-round match along with the Guest of Honour Nemantha Abeysinghe, General Manager of Nippon Paint Lanka and Rizly Illyas, President of SLR.

Sonnek, who had played the game at top level during his heyday, was introduced to the two teams before the kick-off of this clash between the defending champions Kandy SC and the former league champions Police SC.

Meanwhile, Sonnek’s move to visit the Police Park for this domestic rugby encounter was highly appreciated by SLR President Rizly Illyas. “This is a great privilege and honour for SLR to have the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy Douglas Sonnek at the Police Park,” SLR President Illyas told the Daily News.

“Surely SLR will be engaged with Sonnek and his family while moving forward with the Sri Lanka rugby calendar”, Illyas stressed. “It must be stated that the Deputy Chief of Mission and his family wanted to know about the forthcoming tournaments in Sri Lanka and showed great

Interest watching and learning the game,” Illyas added. Earlier, the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung also made it a point to visit the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo on the opening day of the SLR Sevens Tournament.
