I am very proud about Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation to conduct inagural International Taekwondo Championship in Colombo and it’s good exposure for Sri Lankan Taekwondo players said President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Dr. Chungwon Choue in an exclusive interview with the ‘Daily News’ at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
As a world body President I like to see this sport gain popularity among more countries. I hope more countries will take part this type of tournaments in future .
Especially my appreciation goes to Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation President Chaminda Punchihewa and Senior Vice President Kanchana Jayaratne and their team to organise this first Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) International Open Taekwondo Championship, said world Federation President.
WTF and THF are recognised within the Olympic and Paralympic movements as the pioneer for humanitarian efforts. Our commitment to the refugees and displaced persons worldwide has not gone unnoticed by the IOC, as the IOC President Thomas Bach awarded the prestigious Olympic Cup to World Taekwondo and the THF on November 15. World Taekwondo and the THF also received the Peace and Sports award for Combat sport Initiative of the year for our Hope and Dreams Sport Festival in Jordan this year. As a world President of Taekwondo body I dedicate these achievements to the selfless individuals and organisations who have supported us throughout this journey added World Taekwondo President.
Talking about more on this Sri Lankan host Taekwondo International tournament, Bangladesh, Brunai, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal and host Sri Lanka Taekwondo players participated and it gives good boost for them and provided good exposure. As a world body we are always very keen to give support to Sri Lanka and I knew Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka already give good support to develop Sri Lanka Taekwondo. Koren Ambassador Miyon Lee is always very keen on this programs and they handle the Taekwondo Ambassador’s Cup tournament annually and give good support to Sri Lanka Taekwondo, added world Taekwondo President.
Giving infrastructure facilities for this sport is very important and conducting this level of International tournaments also very helpful to the players and I hope Sri Lanka Taekwondo players will bag more medals in future. I know Sri Lanka players already won several medals at South Asian level and they have to look beyond and reach Asian, Commonwealth, Olympic level. I am sure Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation can achieve this level and as the world body we are very keen to give our support, said Dr Chungwon.
Miyon Lee the Ambassador of Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka said they are very close with Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation. The Chairman of the Technical Committee and President of the Kukkiwon Overseas Dispatch Masters Association and Vice President of Sri Lanka and THF chapter Grandmaster Ki Su Lee is working in Sri Lanka as chief instructor of Taekwondo and this Korean Instructor do a tremendous job to promote Sri Lanka Taekwondo.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation presented special mementos to the World Taekwondo Federation President Dr Chungwon Choue and Korean Ambassador Miyon Lee during this Taekwondo International tournament.
