Sri Lanka hosts ‘One Map Sri Lanka’ on World GIS day
In creating awareness and commemorating the World Geographical Information Systems (GIS) day 2022, GIS Solutions (Pvt.) Ltd, the Sole Authorized Distributor for Acronym Environmental Systems Research Institute USA, (ESRI) conducted a competition on zoom, which involved mapping interesting and historically important places onto a digital map.
This was the fifth successive year that GIS Solutions held this style of competition titled ‘One Map Sri Lanka’ targeting two groups; Professional GIS Users and School and University Students/
This programme was conducted for Schoolchildren through the schools with more than 500 entries of a very high standard from students islandwide, were received with a majority being from outstations.
The first prize was won by a Grade 12 student, Y.G.N. Hansika Vidurangi of Rippon Girls College Galle, where she pictured Lankagama, Neluwa. J. Avishka Priyakantha a Grade 11 student of Dutugamunu Centre College Buttala who pictured about Yudhaganawa Sthupa won the second place. The third place in the schools completion was won by a Grade 12 student Chanuli Yashodara of Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda who pictured about Horton Plains National Park.
The top 100 entries in the schools category were awarded with certificates and prizes.
Meanwhile, the competition among adults and professional users of ArcGIS Technology, the best three entries were awarded cash prizes and certificates.
All entries received were added to a Special Sri Lanka Digital GIS Map called, ‘One Map Sri Lanka’.
GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS Technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.
The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999, where Esri President and Co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day.
Today World GIS day is celebrated around the world, every year on the third Wednesday of November and this year it fell on November 16. More information is available at www.gislk.com.
