Sri Lanka, Japan sign agreement to expand skilled employment opportunities from 2027

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and Japan’s IM Japan organisation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce a new Employment Skill Development (ESD) Programme, aimed at expanding employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers in Japan.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday (07) at the SLBFE premises, under the leadership of SLBFE Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe and IM Japan Chairman Kanamori Hitoshi.
Under the agreement, the existing Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP) will be replaced by the new Employment Skill Development (ESD) Programme from April 2027.
The new programme is expected to provide additional employment opportunities for foreign workers, while also offering provisions that enable them to remain in Japan for longer periods.
According to the SLBFE, the initiative aims to strengthen skills development and improve employment prospects for Sri Lankan workers seeking opportunities in Japan.
The SLBFE and IM Japan also expect to work together to facilitate the recruitment of a larger number of skilled Sri Lankan workers to Japan under the new programme. (Newswire)
