Sri Lanka maintains balanced diplomatic relations with all countries – Minister
Explaining Sri Lanka’s foreign policy, Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Vijitha Herath yesterday said that Sri Lanka maintains balanced diplomatic relations with all countries and no nation is given special treatment.
He was responding to a question by a journalist at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department.
He further said that they are doing business with China just as they are doing business with India. Further responding to a question by a journalist regarding the government’s decision to allow a Chinese military training vessel to visit Sri Lanka later this month, he said that falls within the framework of the country’s diplomatic engagements.
Saying that the ship is scheduled to arrive in the Port of Colombo this month, the Minister assured that the arrival of this ship has no threat to the country’s security. “Military ships from various nations have also docked in Sri Lankan ports as part of routine diplomatic exchanges. American, Indian, and German warships have visited before. In such diplomatic relations, we engage with all countries equally,” he said.
Further elaborating on the country’s foreign policy he said, “We do not consider any country to be special. Whether it’s China, India, the United States, Russia, Cuba, or Vietnam, Sri Lanka maintains diplomatic relations with all countries whether it is a powerful nation or not.”
