Sri Lanka makes winning start at Central Asian Beach Volleyball Tourney

Sri Lanka Beach Volleyball players started with a winning note while the men’s teams beat Uzbekistan and Iran and the women’s teams beat Uzbekistan and Maldives at the first Central Asian Beach Volleyball tournament which started at Negambo Beach Park, yesterday.

Sri Lankan women’s pair Chaturika and Hasini defeated Uzbekistan pair Mavlonova and Sulthanboava with 2-0 (21/6, 21/4) in the first game which lasted 25 minutes while Shehani and Jayawardene beat Maldives pair Azuma and Majidha 2-0 (21/18,21/5).

Meanwhile, men’s team Tyron and Ashen beat Uzbekistan pair Akrhamov and Murodilaev 2-0 (21/15,21-12). Anjana and Sandun defeated Sekar and Aro Iran pair 21/16,31/29 after a hard fight with two setters which lasted 52 minutes. However, Nalin and Malintha Yapa lost to Maldives pair in their men’s game 0-2.

Both men’s and women’s teams of Iran, Uzbekistan, Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are participating in this tournament which is conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation under the supervision of the Asian Volleyball Federation and the Central Asian Volleyball Federation.

The opening ceremony of the tournament was held yesterday morning under the patronage of the President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, Vice President of the National Olympic Committee Kanchana Jayaratne, and Mayor of Negombo Dayan Lansa. (D.R.)
