Sri Lanka Men’s 4x400m relay team qualify for WAC

Sri Lanka Men’ s 4x400m relay team qualified for the World Athletic Championship (WAC) in Budapest Hungary as the 12th out of 16th eligible teams to get this qualification. This was confirmed by Sri Lanka athletic Secretary Saman Kumara Gunawardena.

The eight teams who were finalists at the World Championship 2022 directly qualified and the other eight teams qualified through best performance in the qualification time period ended on July 30.

Kalinga Kumarage who set up new 400m record at National Athletic Championship is the key member of the 400m relay team while Aruna Dharshana, Rajitha Rajakaruna and Pabasara Niku are the other members of the team. Meanwhile Sri Lanka sprinter Yupun Abeykoon who is based in Italy already qualified for World Championship but due to his leg injury he has decided not to compete at the World Athletic Championship said SLA secretary Saman Kumara Gunawardena. Yupun had discussed with Secretary last week and confirmed his unavailability due to injury and will be more focused on Asian Games.

In addition Sri Lankan women’s javelin thrower Nadeesha Lekamge is 37th in women javelin throw event. It has only 36 quota places for World Championship. However, USA athlete Kara Wigner top ranked athlete has retired after winning WC 2022. Therefore, Lekamge has a better chance advancing to the quota. This will officially be notified by WA next Saturday (5).

Sri Lanka middle distance athlete Gayanthika Abeyratne is at 58th place and quota is only for 56 athletes for 1500m and Gayanthika will miss the chance to compete in 1500m at World Championship.

Meanwhile Aruna Darshana is at 53rd position where it has 48 quota places eligible for World Championship.

Sri Lankan promising middle distance athlete Tharushi Karunaratne is heading for World Championship but she failed to compete in 800 m at last National Championship and Tharushi is more focused on next Asian Games in China.
