
The Sri Lanka Navy has seized an Indian fishing trawler and apprehended nine Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing illegally in Sri Lankan waters south of Delft Island.
The Navy said the trawler had crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and was engaged in illegal fishing when it was intercepted on the evening of Oct. 3.
According to the Navy, SLNS Samudura had observed several Indian fishing trawlers operating inside Sri Lankan waters south of Delft before carrying out the operation.
One trawler was seized and all nine fishermen on board were taken into Navy custody.
The fishermen and the seized trawler were being brought to Kankesanthurai Harbour and are expected to be handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna for further legal action. (Newswire)
