A group of Indian fishermen engaged in illegal fishing within Sri Lanka’s maritime boundaries near Kankesanthurai, Jaffna, were arrested yesterday (28) by the Sri Lanka Navy.
A total of 13 fishermen were taken into custody, and they have been remanded until February 10.
The arrest follows a complaint filed on January 27 by a Navy officer at the Kankesanthurai Police Station, reporting unauthorized fishing activities by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters.
During the arrest operation, a physical altercation broke out between an Indian fisherman and a Navy officer, resulting in the officer’s service firearm discharging accidentally.
Two fishermen sustained gunshot injuries to their legs and were admitted to Jaffna General Hospital for treatment.
