The Sri Lanka Navy rescued a harbour pilot who fell overboard while attempting to board a merchant vessel near the entrance to the Colombo Port in the early hours of September 17.

The incident occurred as the pilot was preparing to guide the incoming vessel into harbour.

Following an urgent alert from Colombo Harbour Port Control, the Navy dispatched Inshore Patrol Craft P 163, which was patrolling nearby, to launch a search and rescue operation.

Naval personnel quickly located the pilot, pulled him safely from the water, and transferred him to the Port Control Tower Jetty.

The Navy said it remains on continuous alert to respond to emergencies of this nature, faced by distressed members of the maritime and fishing communities within Sri Lanka’s Search and Rescue Region. (Newswire)
