Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara held a press conference at the United National Party headquarters, Sirikotha, on Monday (16), during which he addressed several pressing national and global issues. In his address, the Minister focused on the need for Sri Lanka to adapt to the changing global landscape.

Minister Nanayakkara began by acknowledging the global trend towards digitization. He emphasized that, whether individuals like it or not, the world is advancing into the digital era, and it is essential for Sri Lanka to keep pace with these developments. He highlighted that this transition could result in various aspects of life becoming increasingly digitized.

“In the global arena, the new trend is digitization, and whether we like it or not, we have to enter the digital era. This may lead many to settle in the digital world. The future world will be more conscious of water, air, and climate change, and we must act on that. We are dealing with global warming and environmental protection,” he added.

Minister Nanayakkara underscored the significance of environmental concerns. He pointed out that the future world would place more emphasis on water, air quality, and climate change. He noted that the Government had already identified the importance of addressing climate change and had taken necessary steps. He also reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to addressing global warming and environmental protection.

The Minister also addressed the current global geopolitical situation, particularly focusing on the tense circumstances in Gaza and Ukraine. He stressed that these conflicts could pose a significant global threat and said that the Government is prepared to address these challenges.

The Minister went on to discuss the impending energy crisis and the importance of Sri Lanka being prepared to meet these challenges. He mentioned that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had already emphasized the necessity of being mindful of these issues and finding sustainable solutions.

Minister Nanayakkara stressed the importance of political literacy. He emphasized that being politically literate is crucial for overcoming the prevailing challenges and for the nation to stand united. He encouraged citizens to be more politically aware and engaged to ensure a brighter future for the country.

“It is also essential to be more politically awake and politically literate. Without political literacy, we will not be able to overcome the prevailing challenges and stand united as a nation,” he added.
