A Sri Lankan Opposition delegation has participated in a Chinese‑sponsored programme hosted by the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC), with Vice Minister Sun Haiyan in attendance.

The delegation included representatives from across Sri Lanka’s political spectrum: Professor Prasanna representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB); former State Minister of Education and SLFP representative Surendra Raghavan; SJB MPs Chathura Galappaththi and B. Ariyawansa; UNP representative Kavindu Dehiwala; youth leaders; and members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

SLPP member Madushan Harindra described the event as “a memorable opportunity to represent Sri Lanka and the SLPP on an important international platform and to share this valuable experience with fellow delegates from across Sri Lanka’s political landscape.”

The programme followed a formal invitation issued by the CPC’s Bureau for Southeast and South Asian Affairs, which emphasized that China–Sri Lanka friendship is a shared commitment of all political parties in Sri Lanka.

The CPC invited representatives from the SLPP, SJB, UNP and SLFP to join a multi‑party delegation visiting Shanghai, Shaanxi and Fujian from September 6–15, 2026.

According to the invitation, the visit aims to deepen experience‑sharing and mutual understanding on party building, social governance, and rural revitalization, while also showcasing China’s latest achievements in AI, advanced manufacturing and modern agriculture.

The CPC also named SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam as co‑leader of the delegation, accompanied by nine SLPP representatives. (Newswire)
