Sri Lanka revs up to victory in Asia Pacific Motorsports Championships
Sri Lanka made its mark at the first-ever Asia Pacific Motorsports Championships, a collaborative effort by ASNs across the Asia Pacific region held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia from September 30 to October 1.
In a rally event that saw participation from nearly 17 countries, Sri Lanka had three contestants on the field. Two of them, Sam Smith and Hisham Shamshudeen, proudly clinched the second-place position overall. This achievement was the result of their outstanding performance in two key segments of the championship. In the Rally Trial Event, Smith and Shamshudeen secured the second spot, while in the control speed stages, they maintained a strong third place. Maxxis Xtreme Racing rally duo Shafraz Junaid and Akhry Ameer, also brought glory to Sri Lanka by grabbing the third place in the regularity rally and the fourth place in the control speed stages.
Sri Lanka had a substantial presence across various disciplines at the championship, including Auto Gymkhana, Carting Slalom, Carting, and Rally Trial events. Notably, one of Sri Lanka’s leading drivers, Yevan David, who has been competing in the European circuit, participated as well and secured the fifth place overall. Unfortunately, he faced some engine trouble during his cart race.
The Rally Trial event also featured a ladies’ team consisting of Ashvitha Wickrama and Maryse Navaratne, representing Team CMSC Sri Lanka. They demonstrated competitive performances in several stages of the Rally Trial event.
The championship encompassed five distinct cups: the Rally Cup, Karting Cup, Esport Cup, Auto Gymkhana Club, and Karting Slalom Cup. With more than 170 competitors hailing from 18 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, the event showcased exceptional talent.
