The writ application case regarding the temporary suspension of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), through a Government Gazette, was taken up in the Court of Appeal on May 04 but was re-scheduled for next Thursday, May 12.
President Counsel Faiz Mustapha, lawyers Panduka Keerthinanda, Keerthi Thilakaratne, Sanjeewa Kaluarachchi appeared for the petitioner, Sri Lanka Rugby.
They informed the court that the temporary suspension of Sri Lanka Rugby was done with ulterior motives, hence this matter needed to be resolved urgently.
Therefore the court, considering the urgency of the matter, fixed a ‘short date’ for the case to be taken upon coming Thursday, May 12, 2022.
Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa has temporarily suspended the registration of the National Sports Association for Sri Lanka Rugby Association.
In an extraordinary gazette notification, he had appointed Amal Edirisuriya, Director General of the Department of Sports Development, as the competent authority with effect from April 01, 2022, in respect of administrative and other required proceedings as well as to perform the activities of the association.
This was announced in a special gazette notification issued on April 01, 2022, in accordance with the powers vested in the Sports Minister under Section 32 (b) and 33 of the Sports Act. No. 25 of 1973 and its amendments.
Accordingly, the Director-General of the Department of Sports Development, Amal Edirisuriya has been appointed as the competent authority, effective from April 01.
The competent authority will oversee the administrative and other required proceedings as well as perform the activities of the said national sports association until then.
