Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra focused on securing Sri Lanka’s continued access to the European Union’s GSP+ trade preferences during high-level bilateral talks with Romanian parliamentarians in Bucharest.

Meeting at the Romanian Parliament, Hemachandra held discussions with Marius-Constantin Budăi, President of the Romania–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group and former Minister of Labour; Cristina -Mădălina Prună, Member of Parliament and Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Industries and Services; and Cristian Alexandru Popa, Member of Parliament and Secretary of the Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Highlighting the vital role GSP+ access plays in Sri Lanka’s exports, the Deputy Minister explored pathways to expand economic cooperation with Romania and the broader European market. The dialogue also touched upon strengthening parliamentary relations, expanding bilateral trade and investment, boosting tourism, and fostering educational and people to people exchanges.

Special attention was given to the welfare of Sri Lankan workers in Romania, including ethical recruitment, labour rights, social protection and skilled employment opportunities. Additionally, both sides discussed enhancing engagement with European parliamentary institutions, building on the recent 12th EU–Sri Lanka Inter-Parliamentary Meeting held in Brussels.

The Sri Lankan delegation included Samantha Pathirana, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Romania; Dilani Weerakoon, Director General of the Europe and North America Division; and Prarthana Kaushalya Govinda, Counsellor at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Bucharest. (Newswire)
