Sri Lanka sees Strong Growth in Overseas Worker Earnings

Sri Lanka received US$ 847 million in workers’ remittances in May 2026, marking a significant increase compared to US$ 767.9 million recorded in April 2026 and US$ 641.7 million received in May 2025.

According to the latest data, worker remittances during the first five months of 2026 amounted to US$ 3.91 billion, up from US$ 3.10 billion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

The inflow represents a year-on-year increase of 26 percent in US dollar terms, highlighting the continued strength of overseas earnings sent home by Sri Lankan workers.

In rupee terms, remittances reached Rs. 275.2 billion in May 2026, compared to Rs. 192.1 billion in May 2025. Cumulative remittance inflows for January to May 2026 stood at Rs. 1.23 trillion, reflecting a 33.4 percent increase from Rs. 922.6 billion recorded during the same period last year.

Worker remittances remain one of Sri Lanka’s key sources of foreign exchange earnings, alongside tourism and exports. (Newswire)
