Sri Lanka women’s cricket team led by Chamari Athapaththu gave a disappointing performance in their T20 series against Pakistan which ended in a 0-3 defeat in Karachi on Saturday.
Before the series Sri Lankan team expected to beat Pakistan in this T20 format. According to the ICC women’s T20 rankings, Pakistan is seventh while Sri Lanka is ranked 8th. However, comparing the two teams Sri Lanka had more experienced players like Chamari Atapattu pace bowler Udeshika Prabodani and spinner Inoka Ranaweera.
However, none of the senior experienced players were up to the mark during this Pakistan series.
Chamari Athapaththu was in good form during the recently concluded Big Bash League women’s tournament as well as the Fairbreak International cricket tournament in Dubai In both franchise tournaments Athapaththu was in great form scoring runs heavily but she couldn’t get runs as usual in Karachi.
Chamari Athapaththu scored 6,5 and 37 in their three matches and the Sri Lanka team always heavily depended on Athapaththu to win the matches her failure was the key reason for losing all three matches against Pakistan.
Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets (10 balls to spare) while in the second T20 Pakistan once again defeated by 7 wickets (17 balls to spare). In the third and final game, Pakistan won by 4 wickets after a nail-biting finish.
This is a good eye-opener for the Sri Lankan team as well as coaching staff before the ODI series against Pakistan which will commence on June 1. The second game will be played on June 3 and the final ODI on June 5. Sri Lankan women’s cricketers should play a better game during this ODI series as this series is considered for the next Women’s ODI qualification. We already have missed a chance to take part in the 2023 ODI World Cup next time and now players are focused on the next World Cup qualification.
