Sri Lankan among those trapped in Beirut building collapse

A seven storey building has collapsed in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon where five people including a Sri Lankan woman are trapped in the debris, announced the Sri Lankan Foreign Employment Bureau.

Meanwhile, in view of the escalating violence taking place in Lebanon, a special notice has been issued by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Lebanon to all Sri Lankans working in Southern Lebanon. Deep concerns are rife about a broader regional conflict amid the escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon on the margins of the Israel-Palestine war.

Accordingly, all the Sri Lankans living and working in Southern Lebanon have been advised to inform and register their names and contact telephone numbers with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Lebanon immediately.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Lebanon has introduced two hotline Mobile numbers and an email address for this purpose.They are: First Secretary Sanath Balasuriya on +96170386754 and Insulating Officer Priyantha Dasanayake on +96171960810. Email address – slemb.beirut@mfa.gov.lk In the aftermath of the eruption of Israel-Palestine war, there have been steady increasing exchanges of fire between the Israeli military and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon that borders Israel to the South and Syria to the North and East.

These tensions commenced shortly after Hamas, Palestine’s Islamist militant group classified as a terrorist organization by the United States of America and the European Union launched a massive surprise attack on Israel on October 7 which killed an estimated 1,400 Israelis.
