Eleven boxing coaches from Sri Lanka are set to enhance their skills by attending a special training program in Patiala, Punjab, India. This course is organized by the Sports Authority of India and will take place at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala from November 18 to 24.

Patiala is well-known for offering high-quality training to coaches, and in the past, the Sri Lanka Boxing Association sent 25 boxers and 10 coaches there for training five months ago. This time, the focus is entirely on coaching development.

The training program consists of seven days of theory and seven days of practical workshops. The coaches aim to gain new knowledge and techniques that will help them improve the performance of Sri Lankan boxers, particularly in international competitions like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

Jamitha Gayan, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Association, shared his hopes, saying, “In Sri Lanka, we mainly hold tournaments, but this year is different. We plan to participate in an international tournament in Malaysia this December. We hope to send a well-prepared team, armed with the knowledge we gain from this training.”

The 11 coaches from Sri Lanka are eager to gain international experience. Sri Lanka has limited facilities for boxing, with only a few indoor venues, such as the Royal MAS Arena and Sugathadasa Boxing Ring. In contrast, India has centers in every state, making it an ideal place to learn and enhance their coaching skills, aligning with Sri Lanka’s boxing culture.

In the past, both Sri Lanka and India had a similar standard in the sport, but currently, India holds the top three positions in the Women’s Boxing Rankings, with a dominant number one ranking worldwide. The partnership between India and Sri Lanka continues to thrive, with both countries actively sharing their knowledge and expertise to advance the sport of boxing in the region.

The 13 member coaching team include: Niranjala Senanayake (Grit Strength Academy), Nixon Rubaraj (Vavuniya District Boxing Association), Athula Weerasooriya (Central College Bandarawela), Chathuranga Weerasekara (Ekiriya College), Dasun Cooray (Peradeniya Central College), Shashi Prabath (Suandopananda Maha Vidyalaya, Moratuwa), Ashan Polwatta (Royal College, Dela), DJ Bandara (Pabotuwa College), Pradeep Jayasinghe (Narandeniya National School), Jamitha Gayan Bandara (St Sylvester’s College Kandy), Chandimal Alexander (St Aloysius College, Ratnapura),
