Sri Lankan Para Athletes win 11 Medals at the Asian Para Games.
Continuing the success from a few weeks back under the same coaches (nearly all the same for most events), Sri Lanka won as many as 11 medals, which includes 2 Golds, 5 Silvers and 4 Bronze medals at the 4th Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou!
Nuwan Indika Gamage was the most successful athlete having won two medals, a Gold in the Men’s T44 100m and Silver in the Men’s T64 Long Jump. As a T44 classification athlete, he was able to break the Games record (11.63s) and Asian record (6.68m) respectively.
Pradeep Somasiri also won a Gold medal in the Men’s T46 1500m, with a new Games record of 4 minutes 5.14 seconds. Samitha Dulan Kodithuwakku also broke the Games record in his classification (64.09m) and won the Silver medal in the Men’s F64 Javelin.
Anil Prasanna is another Silver medalist, finishing second best in the Men’s T63 100m. Saman Maduranga Subasinghe won the Bronze medal in the Men’s T47 400m. Palitha Bandara achieving his personal best of 14.15m secured the Bronze medal in the Men’s F63 Shot Put.
The female athletes also faired well as Janani Dananjana and Kumudu Priyanka both finished on the podium in the Women’s T47 Long Jump finals, winning the Silver and Bronze medal respectively. In total, 9 medals were won in Athletics alone.
Swimming also saw two medals as school swimmers Naveed Raheem (D.S.Senanayake College) and Galina Basnayake (Lyceum International School Wattala) won the Bronze and Silver medals in their respective S9 400m Freestyle events. Counting Janani who is a student of Holy Angels Girl School Kuliyapitiya, 3 school children won medals in their events.
An honourable mention goes out to Flagbearer Dinesh Priyantha who broke the Games record (62.83m) but finished in 4th place in the Men’s F46 Javelin. In total, 26 athletes took part in 7 disciplines, which others taking part in Rowing, Archery, Wheelchair Tennis, Table Tennis, Powerlifting and Badminton.
Though everyone can’t win a medal at the end of the day, the effort by all should be appreciated while acknowledging the best achievers!
