Buddhism has been the linchpin of the age-old relations between Sri Lanka and Vietnam and a number of measures have been taken recently to further strengthen Sri Lanka – Vietnam Buddhist ties.

A Sapling of the Sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was planted at the premises of the Bai Dinh Pagoda in Vietnam in March 2023. Following a request made by the Bai Dinh Pagoda Buddhist temple, the Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry has taken measures to construct a gold coloured fence and a wall surrounding the sacred Bodhi tree using Sri Lanka stone carvings such as balustrades (korawak gal), guardstones (mura gal) and moonstone (sandakada pahana).

Bai Dinh Pagoda in Ninh Binh Province is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Vietnam that plays a crucial role in Buddhism. So with the construction of these Sri Lankan-style stone carvings, it is expected to attract tourists to visit this place in Sri Lanka as well.

The foundation stone for the construction of the outer wall was handed over to Ambassador of Vietnam to Sri Lanka Ho Thi Thanh Truc, at the Vietnam Embassy in Colombo, by Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Vidura Wickramanayaka, recently.

Ambassador Ho Thi Thanh Truc said that during her tenure, a number of projects have been implemented, especially for the strengthening of cultural and religious ties between the two countries.

She further said that Sri Lanka and Vietnam shared many common values, especially Buddhism. Buddhism holds a significant place within the tapestry of religion in Vietnam, embodying a profound legacy and cultural influences. The Ambassador appreciated the measures taken by Sri Lankan authorities to strengthen religious ties between the two countries.

The Ambassador said that in the last century, many Sri Lankan monks visited Vietnam to build the Buddhist links between the two countries and currently Vietnamese people also visit Sri Lanka to study and research Buddhism. Religious tourism is developing, helping to enhance mutual understanding between the two nations.

Bai Dinh Pagoda in Vietnam has expressed its willingness to establish a Sri Lankan – Vietnam Cultural Centre at the temple premises.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Wickramanayaka said that Vietnam and Sri Lanka have historical relations dating back to thousands of years, in which Buddhism is the bridge that opens the way for the cultural relationship between the two countries.

The Minister stressed the importance of opening a Vietnamese – Sri Lanka Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka, as well as in Vietnam, in order to further strengthen the diplomatic ties between the two countries. The Minister pledged to provide suitable land for that purpose.
