Sri Lankan students have won 13 medals, including three silver and ten bronze medals, at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad held in Indonesia.

The students, who represented Sri Lanka at the international competition, returned to the island on Wednesday (07), arriving at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

According to the Ministry of Education, the competition was held in West Java, Indonesia, from October 2 to 6, with the participation of representatives from 23 countries.

Sri Lanka was represented by a team of 24 students, comprising 12 from the Mathematics category and 12 from the Science category.

In the Mathematics category, Sri Lankan students secured two silver medals and six bronze medals, while the Science category brought home one silver medal and four bronze medals.

The students were selected through a series of competitions conducted at school, zonal, provincial and national levels. Those who obtained the highest marks at the national-level competition were selected to represent Sri Lanka and subsequently underwent formal training.

The Ministry said the students were nominated for the international competition through the Science and Mathematics Branches of its Education Quality Development Division.

Before departing for Indonesia on October 2, the students met Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya at the Ministry of Education premises.

For the first time, the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education covered the full cost of air tickets for all 24 participating students, with the Prime Minister officially presenting the tickets to them ahead of their departure. (Newswire)
