Israel authorities confirmed yesterday (17) that a Sri Lankan woman has lost her life in the attack on Israel.
The woman named Anula Ratnayake from Kelaniya – Eriyawetiya area has died during the attacks on Israel and her body is to be taken to the Sri Lankan Embassy in Israel within two days.
Meanwhile, two Sri Lankan women have been kidnapped on the Israel-Jordan border and another 48-year-old Sri Lankan has been missing since the violence broke out between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
The Sri Lankan Ambassador to Israel Nimal Bandara confirmed the abduction and stated that the Sri Lankan Embassy is taking steps to locate the two kidnapped Sri Lankan women and the other 48-year-old Sri Lankan missing since October 7.
Ambassador Bandara further said they are yet to receive any information on two other women who have been reported missing during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Bandara also revealed that 27 Sri Lankans who were living in Northern Gaza are currently on the move towards Southern Gaza in Palestine.
Ambassador Bandara said that they have received reports that this Sri Lankan group is currently moving towards Egypt with others from Gaza. He also stated that the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Palestine has confirmed the Sri Lankan group’s safety and movement, adding that the Palestine Office has made arrangements for their passage through a road opened by them to Egypt.
“The International Red Cross Association has also requested the Hamas militants to provide details of people under their custody, which includes foreigners from 36 countries, including Sri Lanka. We will be able to confirm the whereabouts of the two Sri Lankans reported missing if we get the necessary information from Hamas,” Ambassador Bandara said.
