St. Aloysius, Galle and HFC, Wennappuwa emerge hockey champions

St. Aloysius College Galle and Holy Family Convent Wennapuwa emerged boys and girls champions at the All Island schools under 20 Hockey tournament played at Reid Avenue Hockey synthetic courts over the week end.

St. Aloysius and Vidyartha Kandy final game saw a keen tussle while the final result was decided by penalty goals with a one point lead. St Aloysius finally scored a 4-3 victory to take the championship. Earlier in the boys semi finals St Aloysius beat S. Thomas Mt Lavinia 5-3 while

Vidyartha defeated St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa 1-0 to enter the final .

Meanwhile in the girls final HFC Wennappuwa played an attacking game to beat Presidents College Rajagiriya 3-0 to take the title . In the girls semi finals HFC Wennappuwa beat Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo 1-0 while Presidents College defeated Seethadevi BMV Kandy 1-0 to enter the final .

Udesh Sandeepa Abeywardena of St Aloysius was adjudged best player of the boys section Nipuni Ishara Fernando of HFC Wennappuwa was crowned best player of the girls section . Education Ministry Sports Director Daya Bandara was the chief Guest at the presentation ceremony and gave away the awards.

Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Federation Secretary and former National Hockey coach Anuruddha Herath Bandara said this time after the Global pandemic school girls and boys were very keen to take part in this event while the Education Ministry together with Schools Hockey Federation organised this two day event with more schools participation.

Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Federation also have made arrangements to form the National junior pool and this type of tournaments are very important to unearth talent , said Schools Hockey Secretary Anuruddha Herath Bandara
