St. Joseph’s Girls School, Nugegoda Under-17 basketball champions

In a recent sporting event at the Hindu College Grounds in Jaffna, the Under-17 basketball team from St. Joseph’s Girls School Nugegoda displayed their prowess by winning the championship title. They secured this victory by beating the team from Convent of Our Lady of Victories Moratuwa in a closely contested match at the All Island National School Games.

Coached by Ajith Kurruppu, the Chairman of the National Technical Committee, the Under-17 girls from St. Joseph’s put on an impressive show, managing to score 35 goals, while their opponents tallied 31 goals. Melani Perera of St. Joseph’s Girls School stood out as the top scorer with 24 goals, and Dewni Shenaya added another six goals to their tally. The highest scorer for the runner-up team, Convent of Our Lady of Victories Moratuwa, was Aleena Hayic, who contributed 13 goals, and M. Mishel chipped in with nine goals for the Moratuwa school.

In the semi-final matches, St. Joseph’s secured their place in the final by defeating Mahamaya College Kandy, while Our Lady of Victories emerged victorious over Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya. The journey was highly competitive, but the St. Joseph’s Girls School Nugegoda Under-17 basketball team ultimately clinched the Basketball Championship.
