State Minister calls for training on right attitude, laws for granting driving licence
State Minister of Mass Media Shantha Bandara said in Parliament yesterday drivers should be given a one-week residential training on attitude changes and laws pertaining to road transport for granting licences.
“Otherwise, accidents cannot be prevented, no matter how many laws are enacted,” he said.
The State Minister said this while joining the debate on three regulations under the Motor Traffic Act.
He further said that extensive changes have been made in the transport system to be suitable for day-to-day needs. It is necessary to provide some training while recruiting newcomers in any field. Therefore, some training is necessary for the holders of licences for light vehicles and heavy vehicles regarding the negative impacts of road accidents, including loss of life, disability, the situation of the families being helpless after the loss of the life of the head of the family, and how this would impact the economy.
Road accidents also impose significant financial and economic costs on society resulting in reduced productivity, and medical and other resource costs. Therefore, it is a good move for providing a one-week residential training for drivers on right attitude and laws relating to road transport, the State Minister said.
The common people of this country do not demand elections. They request stiff measures for bringing this country back to economic stability. When the people are under some pressure, several political parties are calling for elections with the aim of gaining power using this pressure. People don’t take to the streets. They are forcefully taken to the roads by several political parties. That is how the protests are organized. What the common people want is for the economy to stabilize and strengthen people’s lives. That is what the President is doing at present. The Opposition is afraid because they know that if there is economic stability, they will not be able to continue their political journey. In that situation, it is not the Government but the Opposition that is afraid of the elections, the State Minister said.
