Stern disciplinary action against employees who do not report to work
Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Highways, Ranjith Rubasinghe stated yesterday that as the transport services have been declared as essential service, any sudden strike is considered illegal, and disciplinary measures will be taken against employees who fail to report to work.
Rubasinghe said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has gazetted the public transport service as an essential service last week. He emphasized that initiating a sudden strike by Station Masters and Controllers is unlawful under these circumstances.
The Ministry Secretary added that as a result of the unexpected strikes, the night mail trains bound for Badulla, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa were cancelled yesterday (09), and the Sri Lanka Transport Board buses have been arranged to assist in transporting the affected passengers.
Rubasinghe said that in case of any disturbance in the operation of office trains today (10) because of the strike, steps have been taken to increase the deployment of SLTB buses and offer free transport on SLTB buses for passengers holding train season tickets.
