STF seizes container with cigarettes valued at Rs.1,300 Mn

The Police Special Task Force (STF) conducted a raid arresting a man and seizing a 40-foot container in the Grandpass area that was carrying over 10 million sticks of cigarettes having a street value of Rs. 1,300 million.

Acting on a tip-off, according to the orders and instructions of Special Task Force Commander Senior Deputy Inspector General Waruna Jayasundara, under the guidance of Director Intelligence SP M. M. K. Wijesinghe and ASP Sagara Kulasekara, a team of STF officers including Inspector Paramullage, OIC of the Special Task Force Organized Crime Unit II, conducted a raid and intercepted the container on the road in front of the Kelanitissa Power Station in Grandpass last Thursday (16).

The STF team arrested a 65-year-old man who is a resident of Makola area and seized the container truck transporting the contraband bearing number WPLY 4822 carrying 10,420,000 cigarettes in the tail section of the container which were illegally imported into Sri Lanka without paying excise duty.

Investigations revealed that the container which was loaded with the illegally imported cigarettes was en route to the Orugodawatta container yard at the time of its capture by the STF team.

The arrested suspect together with the seized container and the stock of cigarettes had been handed over by the STF team to the Grandpass Police Station for further investigations.
