He said that preliminary arrangements are being made to form a strong Government led by Wickremesinghe.
“The UNP is presently working with many forces that brought the present Government into power. These forces include prominent groups in the Opposition,” he said
Abeywardena expressed these views while addressing the UNP polling booth representatives in Nagoda and Niyagama in the Hiniduma Electorate on Thursday.
Several pocket meetings were held throughout the electorate on Thursday to make the party members aware of the party’s future activities.
A large number of party members who left the UNP during the last few years, rejoined the party at these meetings.
“Some Local Government representatives who don’t have much knowledge about the party which gave them a ticket to vie for the election think that they can join any political party after being elected to the respective Local Government body,” he said.
Abeywardena said that those who left the UNP called for our ouster from the party. “We have sent 18,000 affidavits to such members and those who sign these affidavits and return to the party will be given an opportunity.”
