The Supreme Court has begun hearing petitions challenging the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill presented to Parliament.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justices Achala Wengappuli and Sampath Abeykoon is hearing the petitions.
Around 25 petitions have been filed, arguing that certain provisions of the proposed legislation violate fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
The petitioners have urged the court to rule that the disputed provisions require approval by a two-thirds majority in Parliament and a referendum to be enacted. (Newswire)
