Surgery mishap at Batticaloa hospital under probe after girl’s death

Kattankudy Police has begun an investigation regarding the death of a 16-year-old girl following a surgery at the Batticaloa Hospital on the order of Batticaloa Magistrate Police said that the girl,   who was admitted to Batticaloa Hospital due to abdominal pain has undergone an operation on March 31, claiming that she had stones in her stomach.

She had died less than 24 hours after the surgery. Taking into account the medical reports, the Batticaloa Hospital has taken steps to release the family members on the same day without a magisterial investigation as a sudden death. Police said a judge who is a relative of the girl’s family came to know about this when the girl’s parents prepared to carry out the last rites according to her religion.

After the judge informed the relatives of the need to ascertain the cause of the girl’s death, police have reported the matter to the Batticaloa court.

According to an order given by the Batticaloa Magistrate, the body of which was ready to be cremated, was taken into custody by the police and taken back to the Batticaloa Hospital morgue for a post-mortem.

Forensic specialist A. Ilango had returned a verdict that the death has caused by excessive bleeding due to the carelessness of the doctor who performed the operation.
