Susal and Dasuni take lead after ten rounds
Sri Lanka’s promising chess player Susal De Silva of Nalanda College and Dasuni Mendis of Passed Pawn CC are in the lead (open and women’s category ) after round 10 of the SL National chess championship which is now in progress at the Chess Federation Headquarters at Nugegoda.
In the open category Susal the 15 year old player with nine points out of possible 10 games beat Ashwin Ahangama in the 10th round while Susal defeated Theekshana Denuwan in the ninth round to come forward . Earlier Susal won against Isara Dahanayake and Chehan Weersinghe in the seventh and eighth rounds. Last time National champion Raninidu Liyanage reached the second place with 8.5 points after ten rounds while Susal and Ranindu will meet each other today (30) at 13th round and this is going to be a keen tussle. Both Susal and Ranindu still maintained their an unbeaten record while Ranindu had three draws Susal had only two draws up to 10th round .
Meanwhile former National Chess Champion Dasuni Mendis (Passed Pawn CC) scoring 7.5 points out of 10 games came to the lead in women’s category. The women’s event is more competitive where all players were fighting each other. Dasuni came to the top while Tharushi Niklesha of Vishaka Vidyalaya came to second place with seven points with three more rounds to spare. Dasuni beat Siyumi Hasithma at the 10th round while Tharushi defeated Esandi Newansa at the same round. Dasuni came back strongly by winning three games in 7th, 8th and 9th rounds, to reach the top slot while Eshaa Pallie , Dihansa Gamage , Tharuli Vihansa and Esandi Newansa all had equal six point each ware laying on third position.
Each of the top selected 14 players are participating in the each category of the SL National Chess Championships round Robin basis in 13 rounds. The National Chess Championships 2021 is conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka with a total cash award of Rs. 335,000/ to be distributed among the winners.
