Susal youngest player to win national chess title
Susal de Silva the promising chess player from Nalanda College , Colombo was crowned champion of the Sri Lanka National Chess Championship concluded at Taj Samudra Hotel yesterday. This was the first time 15 year old Susal won this major title while he also became the youngest player as well as first Nalandian to clinch this title.
After 13 rounds in this tournament Susal who maintained an unbeaten record scored 11.5 points in open category while Ranindu Liyanage of Ananda was second with 11 points just behind Susal with a gap of 0.5 points .The two top players Susal and Ranindu met each other in the final and 13 round but that was ending with a draw and Susal was finally declared National champion with the highest points .
Earlier Susal beat S.Shivathanujan in the 12 th round while he defeated Sanudula Dahamdi at the 11 th round . Ranindu who was favourite to win the title with his experience best K.G.T.S.D Kiriella at 12 th round while he beat Osheen de Silva at the 11 th round also unbeaten in this tournament but he had to draw against four players in this 13 round tournament while Susal drew with three players ahead from Ranindu to take the title in grand style .Kiriella finished third with 8 points while Osheen de Silva and Denuwan Theekshana whoboth finished with 7.5 points each were placed fourth and fifth.
Meanwhile Tharushi Niklesha of Visakha Vidyalaya won the women’s championship by scoring 9 points while Esandi Newansa of Dharmashoka Ambalangoda and Dasuni Mendis of Sri Jaywardenapura University were placed second and third with equal 8 points.
