Kekirawa Acting Magistrate on Saturday ordered the constable who was charged as the main suspect in the death of elephant Bharana in an electrocution incident, to be released on bail of Rs. 250,000.

He was arrested and brought before the court in connection with the incident.

The Acting Magistrate further ordered the suspect constable to appear before the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court again on September 1.

Tusker Bharana, a giant tusker who attracted both local and foreign tourists to the Kalawewa National Park was found dead in mysterious circumstances.

The deceased tusker regularly roamed the Kalawewa National Park and Namal National Park. This elephant was between 30 and 35 years old and had a pair of four-feet-long tusks.

Later it was revealed that the elephant had died of electrocution after getting entangled in an illegal power line.
