Suspect cop remanded
Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday (29) ordered to remand a police officer who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department and presented to the court in connection with the murder of the maid who worked at the home of teledrama producer Sudharma Nethikumara.
Ajith Kumara, Sub-Inspector of Welikada Police, was thus remanded.
The Magistrate remanded the suspect by ordering the Criminal Investigation Department to arrest the other suspects in the incident regardless of their rank and present them to the court.
Presenting the suspect to the court, the Criminal Investigation Department said that the deceased woman was in the suspect’s custody from the moment she was arrested by the police until she was hospitalized. It was revealed that the suspect had taken the deceased to the hospital saying that she fell on the road and was injured.
The Criminal Investigation Department inquired about the delay in arresting the rest of the suspects. The Criminal Investigation Department mentioned that three teams were deployed to arrest the suspects. The Magistrate stated that the police officer who reported the incident to the court was the suspect and he informed the court that the name of the deceased was not recorded in the arrest documents. He further ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to immediately file the summary report of the evidence related to the suspect’s contribution to the crime on the next day.
On May 3, 2023, Rajakumari came to work at a Borella house and on May 11, 2023 two police officers in plainclothes came to this house and took her to the police station. She was beaten and interrogated. Later, she died after being admitted to the hospital.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Merrill Ranjan Lamahewa of the Special Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department and Inspector Madhava Gunawardena presented the facts before the court.
