Suspect defrauds gullible victims of nearly Rs. 35Mn

Nugegoda Division Criminal Investigation Division said a person was recently arrested in Kaduwela for defrauding 26 people of a total of nearly Rs. 35 million.

The suspect had obtained funds from the victims by saying that he would build houses for them and give them lands. He was arrested while hiding in a house in Kaduwela. The authorities found a fake identity card and a passport in the 41-year-old suspect’s possession.

According to the Police, the suspect had carried out the scam by posting advertisements on the Internet, while running a company in the Malabe, Udawatta area.

The Police said that 26 people who lost their money due to the fraud had lodged complaints with the Mirihana Special Crime Investigation Division and the Malabe Police. Acting on the complaints, the Police went to the suspect’s office in the Malabe, Udawatta area, but he had already closed it and fled the area, Police said.

The Police said that the suspect had signed contracts with those people saying that he would take Rs. 1 or Rs. 2 million from them and give them a loan of Rs. 8 million. It has been revealed that the suspect had directed all the fraudulently obtained money to night clubs and casinos.

Police said that they are conducting further investigations regarding the bank accounts in the name of the suspect and whether the suspect has defrauded more individuals of money by running companies in other areas in this manner.

The suspect is to be presented before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court for an identification parade.
