Suspect who fled from prison re-arrested, injures himself in police cell

The Panadura North Police said that a suspect who fled while in custody of Kalutara prison officers had

been arrested again. However he was taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained by banging his head against the iron door of the cell while being held in police custody. A 32-year-old man named Murawatte Kabaraya, a resident of Moratuwa Koralawella area,was arrested yesterday by a group of officers of the and brought to the police station where he was detained when he injured himself.

The suspect was admitted to Panadura Base Hospital. The suspect, who had been accused of many crimes including robbery, had been arrested and taken to prison. However he had to be admitted to the Kalutara Nagoda General Hospital due to an emergency illness and escaped while being treated under the protection of prison officials.

A police officer said that the prison authority has also been informed about the suspect. Police sources further stated that the suspect is heavily addicted to the drug Ice and had caused injuries to himself due to the lack of the drug.

A hospital spokesperson said the suspect is being treated at the Panadura Basic Hospital under guard.
