Suspect with 1,100 cigarettes arrested
An individual with 1,100 illegal cigarettes in his possession was arrested by two Police officers attached to the Nuwara Eliya Police Station. Nuwara Eliya Headquarters Police Chief Inspector Premalal Hettiarachchi said the cigarettes did not have the Government warnings printed on the packets and had been brought from Germany.
The stock of ‘Red Manchester’ cigarettes had been brought to this country from Germany and had been imported without any inspection being carried out or payment of taxes and had been sold illegally. This was revealed during preliminary investigations.
The Headquarters Chief Inspector of Police also said that based on a tip-off received by the Police Inspector, he had carried out the raid together with the Police Constable on August 14. The Police seized the stock of illegal cigarettes along with the suspect who had been preparing to sell them.
The Nuwara Eliya Police said that a 47-year-old resident of Talawakelle, Abdul Ghafoor Mohammed Faisal, was arrested while trying to sell the cigarettes which were in his possession. The person who was taken into custody has been released on bail, and was present at the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court on August 21, the Headquarters Police, Chief Inspector said.
