Suspect with Kerala cannabis worth over Rs. 75 Mn held
The Sri Lanka Navy and Police apprehended a suspect with over 227Kgs of Kerala cannabis, during a combined search operation conducted in Ponnalei, Jaffna on Saturday (5). The operation also lead to the seizure of a lorry used to smuggle narcotic drugs.
The special operation was mounted by SLNS Agbo in the Northern Naval Command with the assistance of Waddukoddai Police in Ponnalei area. In this search operation, the Naval and Police personnel had searched a suspicious lorry on the road and recovered the stock of Kerala cannabis in it. The seized eight sacks in the vehicle contained 105 packages of Kerala cannabis weighing about 227 Kgs and 915g. Thus, the stock of Kerala cannabis, the lorry and a suspect in connection to the incident were taken into custody.
The gross street value of seized Kerala cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 75 million.
The suspect held in this operation is a resident of Bandarawela, aged 31. Meanwhile, the suspect along with the consignment of narcotic drugs and the lorry was handed over to the Waddukoddai Police for further legal action.
