Suspects in Tangalle, Dickwella murders identified

Police have identified the suspects involved in the two shootings that took place at Kudawella in Tangalle and Dickwella in Matara

as well as finding the T56 weapon used in the Dickwella shooting incident on August 15 night. A senior Police officer said that the killings appear to have been the result of clashes over drug trafficking in the underworld.

A 45-year-old man named M.A.S. Pushpakumara was killed in Dickwella. It has been revealed that he is an original resident of Moratuwa who currently resided in Matara Uyanwatta. A senior Police officer mentioned that he got married and settled in Matara and was connected to the underworld.

Police said he was brought to a deserted place near Modara Mandira Sanasa Bank in Dickwella and shot dead with a T56 weapon. Shell casings from the T-56 gun that was fired were also found around the place where he died due to gunshots.Police said that 21 shots were aimed at him.

Investigations have also revealed that the deceased in Dickwella along with his friend came to this place on a motorcycle according to a phone call given to him by a certain person. He invited a friend and came on a motorcycle saying, “there is some money to collect, let’s go to collect it for a short time”, the friend who accompanied him on the motorcycle told the Police.

Police said that it appears from the statements of the friend that the murdered person got off the motorcycle and was engaged in a conversation with another person and that person shot him. The friend who started the motorcycle at the time of the shooting fled from the place and later came to the Police.

Police also said there is information that the person who was killed is related to the underworld. Police have also received information that there are charges against this person for having executed a contract in 2006 and carried out a murder and for shooting and killing a person in 2015. Apart from that, Police said that the murdered person has been accused of many crimes that happened in areas such as Negombo, Gampaha and Dickwella.

Police said the man who was shot and killed in Tangalle Kudawella is a skipper of multi-day cruises and so far there are no criminal charges against him. But Police said that in 2018 and 2020, there was an allegation of possession of cannabis and an allegation of assault against him.

Nimesh Ranga, a 35-year-old man was killed in this second shooting attack at Tangalle, Kudawella, Dheerananda Mawatha.

The Police said that he was a resident of Nakulugamuwa and was having a conversation with some friends when two men came on a motorcycle and shot him. He was shot after the two men called out his name. According to police, it appears that the shooters did not know this person by face and they identified him by asking his name and shot him when he responded.
