Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya clinches Schools Hockey Championship

In an exciting final Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya emerged as the champions of the All Island Schools Games Hockey Championship. They secured their title with a narrow 1-0 win over Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa. The tournament, which took place from October 18 to 20, was held at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya.

The star of the final match was Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya’s player, Lasanthi Madushani Kulasekara, who played a vital role in her team’s success by scoring the only goal in the final . As a result, the Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa had to settle for the runner-up position. A total of 23 schools from across the country participated in this exciting championship.

In the semi-finals, Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya secured their spot in the final by defeating Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya Nawala in a penalty shootout with a score of 2-0. On the other side, Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa earned their place in the final by beating Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya Matale with a convincing score of 3-0.

The battle for third place saw Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya Nawala clinching victory with a 2-0 win against Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya Matale. Throughout the tournament, Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya Nawala overcame Nadaraja College Jaffna with a commanding 5-0 victory, while Swarnamali Balika Vidyalaya Kandy defeated Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya Galle with a score of 3-0. Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya Matale managed to secure a 1-0 win against Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo.

The road to the final was challenging, and Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa had to face a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw against Panadura Balika. In the end, they emerged victorious in the penalty shootout. The tournament also featured the expertise of Technical Officer Indrawansa Herath and former national player and International umpire Asian Technical Officer, Deputy Principal Henry National School, Matale.
