Swimmer Galina ends 13-year drought with silver medal

Sri Lanka secured swimming medals after 13 long years at the Asian Para Games. Galina Basnayake and Naveed Raheem proudly clinched silver and bronze medals, making the nation proud on the fifth day of the fourth Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China on Friday.

Galina Basnayake, a gold medalist at the Asian Youth Para Games, won a silver medal in the women’s 400m freestyle S9 category. She finished the final in an impressive 5 minutes and 18.28 seconds, bringing home Sri Lanka’s first swimming medal since 2010. The 18-year-old swimmer from Lyceum International School is coached by the renowned swimmer Julian Bolling, who is also the swimming coach of the Sri Lankan team. Another young talent, 18-year-old Naveed Rasheen Raheem, a student of DS Senanayake College, secured a bronze medal in the men’s 400m freestyle (S9) finals, completing the race in 4 minutes and 39.63 seconds.

In athletics, the gold medalist in men’s 100m (T44), Nuwan Indika Gamage, added another medal to his collection. Gamage claimed the silver medal in the men’s Long Jump (T64) finals with a jump of 6.68 meters, setting a new Asian Para Games record. The gold medal went to India’s Solairaj Dharmaraj, who set the record with a jump of 6.80 meters.

Sprinter Anil Prasanna also contributed to Sri Lanka’s medal tally by securing the silver medal in the men’s 100m (T63) finals with a remarkable time of 12.98 seconds. Sri Lanka now boasts a total of 10 medals and is currently ranked 18th in the overall medal standings at the Asian Para Games.
