Sylvestrian boxers to be honoured

The present boxers who kept the Sylvestrian flag flying high in boxing by winning T.B.Jayah, Stubbs Shield and Youth boxing meets are to be honoured with awards. The three boxing events saw the participants bringing honour to the school and Kandy by winning all three meets. St. Sylvester’s College has produced a number of boxing stars over the years and this is going to be a worthy honour. This is organized by the Old Sylvestrian Sports Club and 1987 group next Sunday at the Rivora Heights Hotel.

St. Sylvester’s College is a school which has produced some top class boxers and remains as the one and only school in the country, if not in the whole world, to have produced a sportsman who was selected to represent two different countries at two different Olympic Games. He is none other than Malcolm Bulner, the eldest of the famous Bulner brothers. He was a south paw pugilist and was moulded by late Derrick Raymond the famous coach who migrated to England and passed away. Some products produced by Derrick Raymond were Nimal Lewke now a retired DIG who was also a stylish boxer and brought honour to the country at several meets locally and internationally, A.C.R. Herath, M.Reyal, S.A. Azwer, H. Edmund, J. Peterson, D.C. Weerasinghe, T.S. Hassan,Derick Gunasinghe and N.Thirukumar.The first Sylvestrian to win a national boxing title was Donald G. Labrooy who won the Bantam Weight title in early1950’s. He was followed by Malcolm, Marshal, Milroy de Soysa, Anslem de Soysa and M.E Marikar. Boxing was synonymous with St. Sylvester’s which was in the forefront of schools boxing winning the coveted Stubbs Shield several times –within fourteen years they won on 12 occasions.

At present the man who is guiding the Sylvestrian boxers on the correct path is coach Bandula Vithana Gamage who has done a great service to elevate the standard of college boxing. He is one of the top and fearless boxers produced by St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy, winning his colours at St. Sylvester’s College, Police, Central Province, the YMCA and at the nationals a number of years. The other coach is T.B.J.G. Bandara both have guided this school in the correct way and also the MIC S. Sivaneshan has done his best with superb support from out of the ring.
