The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera said that steps were taken to allocate Rs.12,000 million for the fertilizer subsidy used for tea cultivation.

The Fresh Tea Festival, an annual ritual held in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea Board and private tea manufacturers, was held recently (24) at the historic Gatabaru Rajamaha Vihara in Kotapola.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera participated as the chief guest.

Fresh tea obtained from all tea growing areas had to be offered to triple gem at the historical Gatambaru Raja Maha Vihara. Many officials from the public sector and private sector representing tea cultivation participated in the event.

Due to the economic crisis, the Covid 19 epidemic situation and the fertilizer crisis, the application of fertilizers for tea cultivation was reduced. Due to this, a significant decrease in tea harvest was reported in the past three years.

For this reason, the Minister mentioned that he has taken steps to provide a fertilizer subsidy for the tea industry as well as a fertilizer subsidy for paddy cultivation, and said that he has instructed the SL Tea Board to allocate an amount of 12,000 million rupees for this purpose.

Also, the two government-owned fertilizer companies have produced 05 types of tea fertilizers and have taken steps to provide these fertilizers to the farmers at a minimum price of 50 percent compared to the price sold in the market. According to that, a bundle of tea fertilizer worth around 13,000 rupees can be bought for 5,500 and 7,500 rupees in the market.

In the past, there has been some setbacks in this fertilizer program, so the negotiations to apply tea fertilizer under the intervention of the tea manufacturers Association have been successful. Accordingly, steps have been taken to issue fertilizers on the intervention of tea manufacturers for the arrangement of providing tea fertilizers to tea growers.

The Minister also stated that he is confident that the tea production in this country will increase once again by next year by applying fertilizers to tea cultivation.
