“Tea will further deepen friendship between people of China and Sri Lanka”
Sri Lankan black tea is world-famous and it is being heavily consumed in China, said Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong.
“The Chinese and Sri Lankan people have very similar love for tea and this beverage will further deepen the understanding and friendship between the people of China and Sri Lanka and promote the people-to-people connections between China and Sri Lanka.”
He made these observations at the ‘Tea for Harmony Yaji Cultural Salon’ event held in Colombo yesterday as part of the celebrations of the International Tea Day which was held on May 21 hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of of China and the Embassy of China in Sri Lanka, and organized by the China Cultural Center in Sri Lanka and the Culture and Tourism Department of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Ambassador Qi Zhenhong said that China has been the hometown of tea for thousands of years and drinking tea has been regarded as an elegant part of life in China. “China’s tea culture also spread far and wide from the ancient Silk Road and has become a link and bridge for exchanges between the two countries.
Speaker Mahinda Yappa Abewardena said that in ancient times, tea embarked on an extraordinary journey through the Silk Road, and now it has become a bridge for exchanges between China and the world. “In the Southern province it is the number one foreign exchange earner in the country.”
Inspector Lai Fuqiang from China introduced the cultural and tourism resources of Guangxi at the event. Today(May 22), the Chinese (Guangxi) delegation and their Sri Lankan counterparts will jointly hold a “street flash” in Colombo’s famous tourist destinations such as Independence Square, Lotus Theater and BMICH, and meet teachers and students of the University of Colombo.
