Teacher trainees’ monthly food allowances increased to Rs. 8,000

“Teacher trainees who are following their three-year residential teacher training courses at 19 National Colleges of Education countrywide are to be granted with higher food allowances from next month (August). Accordingly, a teacher trainee would get an allowance of Rs.8,000 per month from next month. At present a teacher trainee receives only Rs.5,000 per month.

The Education Ministry has received the approval of the Cabinet for this. Since the Education Ministry needed to pay teacher trainees higher food allowances at the beginning of this year, it was unable to do so due to lack of funds at the Education Ministry in the recent past.

A teacher trainee is paid only Rs.160 per day for their meals by now and this amount was proved to be inadequate for them to cover up their day-to-day meals.

“Nearly, 8,000 teacher trainees would qualify to receive these increased allowances since next month,” said Kurunegala District Senior Education Director W. M. Balasooriya speaking at a meeting of school heads of the Kurunegala District Government Schools held at Kurunegala yesterday (29).
