Tempers flared up in Sharjah international Stadium during the thrilling match between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday. This was after Afghan seamer Fareed Ahmed uttered a mouthful to Pakistan batsman, Asif Ali, as a send-off during the penultimate over of the match.
This incident was highlighted by the International TV live coverage.
However, in the heat of the moment in Sharjah Asif Ali came very close to hitting the Afghanistan bowler Fareed Ahmed with the willow in hand.
When Ali was walking back to the dugout, Fareed found himself right in the path of Asif as he pumped his fist and roared. Clearly unimpressed with how close the bowler had come and celebrating right in front of his face, Asif stood and stared at him. Fareed didn’t budge. He stared back. Asif then shoved him off, and Fareed still kept staring. Asif then raised his bat as if he would strike, triggering memories of Javed Miandad and Dennis Lillee.
Thankfully umpires and the Afghan players swooped in to defuse the situation. Fareed Ahmed took three vital wickets but Afghanistan couldn’t win the match as Pakistan sealed the victory with four balls to spare and ensured the final berth.
In the meantime the same ground in Sharjah between Sri Lanka and Afganistan super four game Sri Lankan batter Dhanushka Gunatilleka and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan had a tense situation and exchanged words between them and senior players of Afghanistan and onfield umpires were able to settle the situation to continue the game.
