Wildlife Department officials say that an area of more than 300 acres in the Thabbowa sanctuary has been destroyed due to a sudden fire.

The fire that broke out in the afternoon of the 11 August lasted for almost 10 hours, spreading over an area of 300 acres of sanctuary around the 13th Mile Post area. Teams including wildlife officers, Thabbowa Army Camp personnel, Police, and the Puttalam Urban Council’s fire unit combined to bring the fire under control.

The security guard of the site said, this was not a bonfire but an act of arson and investigations have been started to find the persons behind this destruction. A report has been called on the incident.

Wildlife officials suspect that some persons or groups are behind the fire. Their purpose may have been to hunt wild animals after the burning, say the officials.

The Karuvalagasweva Police said that after 10 hours of working together with the relevant teams, the fire which was spreading throughout the sanctuary was brought under total control.

The wildlife officials request people not to start fires in jungles with unscrupulous aims and those who are behind this carnage would be strictly dealt with.
