Thalangama shooting: Biker arrested on return from Singapore
A suspect related to a shooting and murder in Thalangama has been arrested at the airport.
Athurugiriya Police said that the man who rode the motorcycle in the incident of shooting and killing a person giving money on interest in the Koramba area of the Thalangama police division, on August 25, was arrested at the Katunayake airport yesterday morning (31).
Based on information received by Police officers that the suspect involved in the incident was to leave Sri Lanka for Singapore on the morning of August 31, they had informed the Sri Lankan Airport Immigration Officers who had said that the suspect had left. Police said the suspect was arrested by Immigration officials upon his return to the Sri Lanka airport following a request made to immediately contact the authorities at the Singapore airport via to deport the suspect.Police said that the arrested suspect is a 22-year-old youth named Maleesha Methmina, a resident of Athurugiriya.
Janaka Pushpakumara, who lends money for daily interest by profession, had been walking to his mother’s house on August 25, at Robert Gunawardena Mawatha, South Thalangama, Koramba having gone by three-wheeler to collect money and interest money given to customers, when two unknown persons had fired several shots at him and fled. The seriously injured victim was taken to Talangama Hospital and transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment where he succumbed to the injuries sustained.
The person who lost his life in the shooting attack is a cousin of Chaturanga Pushpakumara alias Bunty, an organized criminal and gang member and leader who is hiding in the country of Dubai.
Isanka Madhukalpa alias Gadda, an organized criminal and gang member residing in Athurugiriya, had been estranged from Bunty for sometime due to a dispute over drug trafficking. According to Police, it had been revealed during preliminary investigations that this murder had beencarried out by Gadda to take revenge and hurt the feelings of Bunty.
A senior police officer said that during the questioning of the arrested suspect who rode the motorcycle for the murder, he had said he did not know any information about the shooter and that he had got on the motorcycle in Battaramulla and after carrying out the shooting, he had got off the bike near a forest area and left.
Police said that the suspect will be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court and detention orders will be obtained to enable further questioning. Athurugiriya Police on the instructions of OIC Chief Inspector Sharada Fernando are conducting investigations.
